Dedication Ceremony for the new Amphitheater of
The Mesa County Arboretum at The Gardens

The dedication ceremony for the new Amphitheater of The Mesa County Arboretum at The Gardens, took place at 1 p.m., Saturday, June 9, 2007. Just completed, this Amphitheater seats 100 people and will primarily be used for environmental and educational programs. It is the newest addition to The Colorado State University Mesa County Extension Office’s offering of public demonstration and research gardens and a water-wise arboretum at the Mesa County Fairgrounds.

“This Amphitheater is the result of the combined effort and generosity of dozens of companies and individuals without whom it could never have been created.,” states Dr. Curtis Swift, Area Extension Agent, Horticulture, Colorado State Cooperative Extension. “From the design and construction contributions of Wayne Hopper and Matt Morgan of Landscape Design and Construction and countless volunteers, to the generous financial support of Colorado Garden Show, Inc. and dozens of individual and corporate contributors, has emerged this beautiful addition to the Mesa County Arboretum and Gardens. All of these people have been invited to attend the dedication ceremony and enjoy the official ‘grand opening’ of this wonderful facility.”

Also expected to attend the dedication are a number of area dignitaries including Bernie and Mary Beth Buescher, the Mesa County Commissioners, Mayor Jim Doody, Members of the City Council and the Bacon Family Foundation/Western Colorado Community Foundation, City of Grand Junction Forestry Department and Colorado State Forest Service staff members, as well as several board members of the Colorado Garden Show from Denver. They will join the countless contributors of funding and labor for the ceremony and refreshments that follow.

The Amphitheater is roughly in the middle of The Mesa County Arboretum at The Gardens which is situated along a narrow strip of previously undeveloped property at the Fairgrounds that runs along the south edge of the main parking lot and adjacent to B road. The Arboretum site is nearly 600 feet long and covers over 50,000 square feet. The Arboretum adjoins the 26,000-plus square feet of manicured gardens at the CSU Extension Complex and provides additional space for horticultural education activities for the region. The Mesa County Fairgrounds is located at 2775 Hwy 50, Grand Junction, Colorado.

Dr. Swift will MC the dedication and refreshments will be provided in part by the Western Colorado Gardening Foundation which was responsible for raising considerable financial support for the Amphitheater.
