Foundation Moves ForwardMany Activities and Projects are Already UnderwayFebruary 28, 2003 -- Grand Junction, Colorado A primary objective of the WCGF is to build cooperative, mutually supportive relationships with other gardening organizations to partnership in planning and completing projects and provide general horticultural education. Monthly meetings held for members include educational programs and are also open to the public without cost. So far this year we have had an educational program presented by John Moore on Hummingbird and Butterfly Gardening and another program presented by Ursula Hemmerich on the care of roses. Daily Sentinel articles have publicized these meetings and the WCGF has also received television coverage introducing the public to western Colorado's newest gardening foundation. Future educational programs are scheduled. The WCGF is the sponsor organization for the Tree Planting Program 50/50 Grant Application to The Colorado Parks and Recreation Association Foundation submitted on behalf of Orchard Mesa Middle School. Fruita Vietnam War Memorial Park. The WCGF reviewed and made recommendations regarding landscape design and plant selection for the new “Field of Dreams” Memorial. The WCGF will assist the Memorial committee staff in execution of the planting in the summer of 2003. Veterans Memorial Park, Fruita. The WCGF will determine plant selection for the empty planters currently in the Park and execute planting early in the summer of 2003. On May 10, 2003, the WCGF will be an exhibitor at the Western Colorado Botanical Society's annual event -- Bloomin’ Deals, a spring arts, products and crafts show and sale. Handcrafted gardening items made by WCGF members will be sold as a fundraising activity. Various projects in support of the Colorado State University Cooperative Extension - Tri-River Area, are also being considered, including a storage facility, workshop and training facility, gazebos and an outdoor amphitheater. |
