WCGF Grants $250 For TreesTrees Planted at Orchard Mesa Middle School on Arbor DayApril 25, 2003 -- Grand Junction, Colorado The WCGF acted as a sponsor organization for a 2003 Tree Planting Program 50/50 Grant Application to The Colorado Parks and Recreation Association Foundation. This application was submitted on behalf of Orchard Mesa Middle School in Grand Junction. The WCGF worked closely with the school’s faculty to timely complete the $500 Grant Application. Additionally, the WCGF made a $250 grant to the School in support of this activity, and the School also received several other donations from local businesses. The trees purchased by the School were planted on Arbor Day, April 25, 2003 on the grounds of OMMS. All members were invited to attend the tree planting which began at 10:30 AM. The sprinkler system for the School grounds has already been installed, so this was an optimum time for planting trees. The School bought six large trees for this years event, at $250 to $300 per tree—and these discounted prices were negotiated with several local nurseries. The School took care of having the holes dug early in the morning, and the OMMS faculty used us, as "authorities", to supervise the actual planting of the trees. Consequently, WCGF members were technical representatives present when the trees were actually planted and coordinated the involvement of faculty and students in planting the trees. By working with the children of OMMS, WCGF promoted horticulture and education by providing guidance for good gardening practices and also established an Arbor Day tradition at the School. This is the first year of a multi-year plan that the School is developing to landscape the grounds surrounding OMMS. The grounds really show the traffic of 580 middle school kids in attendance there. This is definitely a blank "canvas" and provides plenty of opportunity for improvement. And, there should be some terrific "before" and "after" pictures in a few years. See the Photo Gallery "Arbor Day" on the Members Page for pictures of the event. |
