Trees for Orchard Mesa Middle School
Western Colorado Gardening Foundation granted $250 funds for purchasing trees to
be planted at the Orchard Mesa Middle School (OMMS).
They are also matching funds and together the WCGF is "sponsoring" OMMS in the
application for the 2003 Tree Planting Program 50/50 Grant Application to the
Colorado State Parks (sponsored by the Colorado Garden Show). If the
application is successful, they will have $1,000 to plant some great trees on
Arbor Day, April 25th.
The OMMS tree grant application was completed and was mailed March 15
to meet the Colorado Parks and Rec Assn Foundation's postmark cutoff date.
It was great working with Barbara Pruessing on the application and Bobbi Muhovich who did all
the work in creating the landscape design plan at OMMS. There were several
meetings to coordinate text input from staff members and with school District 51
grounds maintenance supervisor, Earl Lee.
The tree planting will be on Arbor Day, Friday, April 25th. The WCGF as
"sponsor" for OMMS in the grant application will be assisting in the planting.
The District 51 grounds crew will be digging the holes. They plan to buy 5 or 6 trees this year, $250 to $300 per tree. They are
negotiating prices with several of the nurseries. They also have several other
donations from businesses.
The sprinkler system for the field has been installed so it is an optimum time
for planting trees. This being the first year of a multi-year plan they are
developing. The grounds really show the traffic of 580 middle school kids
in attendance there. Definitely a blank "canvas" and plenty of opportunity for
improvement. There should be "before" pictures and "after" a few years from
now.
